Partha bertemu dengan Ka Bareskrim Mabes Polri

Jakarta, 26 Maret 2018

Panel Discussion: “Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery”

Panel Discussion: “Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery”
“We cannot just be silent seeing the fact of human trafficking and slavery that’s happening right now, there is something that must be done to help them”
Sara was delivering the human trafficking presentation.
Edwin Rekosh explained the social problems solution through law.
“We cannot just be silent seeing the fact of human trafficking and slavery that’s happening right now, there is something that must be done to help them,” that was the words repeated over and over by Rahayu Saraswati D. Djojohadikusumo, well known as Sara, in the panel discussion “Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery”. Sara is the founder of Parinama Astha Foundation and Indonesia for Freedom Movement, which is active in eradicating the human trafficking and slavery in Indonesia. Parinama Astha itself means ‘to transform into hope’.
Sara revealed facts about the human trafficking, that Indonesia has entered the trafficking network as the transit point, market’s destination, and even the source for the trading itself. Through these facts, Sara reminded the audiences, that even though this kind of trading seems not related to our daily lives, this is already happening in Indonesia and might befall to the people around us. Not only in Indonesia, around the world itself the human trafficking network has become broader with 27 million people already traded including 100.000 children and female as the major victims that ended up as commercial sex worker. Sara once again reminded the audience not to be overwhelmed by the numbers’ nominal, because each of that numbers represents every person that needs to be saved.

< Sara

Even though the trafficking condition has worsening, it does not mean there is not any solution. “There are many researches and efforts to fight human trafficking, but there is no network to connect that information,” explained Sara. Sara hoped that students of UPH Faculty of Law could act to fight the trafficking whether it is small or large. “With researches or even by only spreading these facts, we could develop the awareness of human trafficking,” she added.

The discussion continued with the speaker Edwin Rekosh, a lecturer in Columbia Law School and Executive Director of PILnet: The Global Network of Public Interest Law. In his session, Edwin explained how the law could be used as a solution for the problems in society.

The audiences then raised some of the social problems that are happening nowadays such as drugs and poverty. Edwin described how those problems could be solved with law. For example, for drugs problem, one of the solution is to legalize the usage of methadone. Methadone could be used as an anti-addictive for the drugs user, however, because methadone is still classified as drugs, the legal usage of this substance is still prohibited.

The two-hour seminar that was held on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 ended with giving the souvenirs to both of the speakers. Approximately 80 participants, consisted of UPH Faculty of Law students and lecturers as well as other universities’ Faculty of Law students, attended this seminar. (lau)

SARA DJOJOHADIKUSUMO’S ENVIRONMENT

The actress, social activist, wife and mother talks about why her love for the environment results in a new nickname.

Thirty-year-old Sara is a woman of many roles. She is an actress, a social activist, a politician, a film producer, a wife (to Harwendro Adityo Dewanto, whom she married in 2014) and a mother. Inspired by her beloved father, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, she is also an environmentalist. Thus, it is only apt for Prestige to shoot her within the lush surroundings of Pancar Mountain Nature Park in Sentul, just outside bustling Jakarta.

“In 2011, I attended the Climate Reality training sessions held here in Jakarta, where I learned first-hand about climate change from the former U.S. Vice President Al Gore,” Sara recalls. “That was the turning point that made me more proactive in fighting for the environment. Because I believe if you care about your life, you would care about the environment.”

Caring for Mother Nature

Sara says that among her many concerns about Indonesia is the issue of climate change. “Indonesia is an archipelago. It means that we’ll be one of the countries impacted most by climate change, destroying our marine life in the process. Nature doesn’t need humans; humans need nature. Indonesia is one of the world’s lungs, but we’re losing our forests and therefore depleting the earth’s oxygen and destroying the homes of many animals.”

She continues: “We need to start counting the cost of doing business that is not sustainable. We need to replant our forests, but in a way that provides sustainable living for the people who live in and around them. We need to move from fossil fuels to sustainable energy or bio fuels, and we need to see those who intentionally cause harm to our environment as criminal offenders, because they actually put our lives at risk.”

Her family business, Arsari Group – which is named after the three children of Hashim and Anie Djojohadikusumo: Aryo, Sara and Indra – whose core businesses are in agribusiness, mining, minerals, logistics and energy, has built Pusat Rehabilitasi Satwa-Harimau Sumatera Dharmasraya, a special conservation organisation situated on the land owned by one of the group’s companies, Tidar Kerinci Agung (TKA), in West Sumatra.

“Fifteen hectares of land has been allocated to the conservation of Sumatran tigers and other wildlife endemic to Sumatra,” Sara explains. “We are currently in the building stage, working with the funding and experts from The Aspinall Foundation (a British charity that works to promote wildlife conservation set up by professional gambler and zoo owner John Aspinall in 1984).”

Furthermore, Arsari Group established the Prof. Sumitro Djojohadikusumo Conservation Forest, named after Sara’s grandfather. Located in the palm plantation of TKA, this 2,400-hectare area is “planted with various local fruit plants with the hopes of fulfilling the needs of the wildlife living there,” says Sara. “For the creation of this conservation forest, PT TKA and my father have been awarded the Kalpataru for the Environment Conservationist field, given directly by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia in June 2014.”

Hashim Djojohadikusumo, who is Arsari Group’s CEO and Chairman, supports the Jogja Nature Conservation Foundation and the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation. He also established Arsari Itci Kartika Utama Forest in East Kalimantan, which has an agro culture programme for sustainable energy production. The family foundation, Yayasan Arsari Djojohadikusumo, has meanwhile been lobbying for the conservation of rhinoceros through a captivity programme in three locations owned by Arsari Group in West Sumatra, Aceh and East Kalimantan.

The Need for Role Model

Having lived abroad for quite some time, Sara, who double-majored in Classics and Drama from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and graduated from the International School of Screen Acting in London, believes that what differentiates the mindset of people in Indonesia from those in other countries is “the understanding and the policies set by the leadership, and the implementation of those policies. We need to have the right kind of policies that will benefit us and the environment we live in for the long run and we need to implement them. We need leaders who will not be afraid of being unpopular among the powerful people who only have their own interests in mind.”

Aside from environmentalism, Sara has many other projects. “My passion is to be a professional actress,” says Sara, whose debut in the movie Merah Putih in 2009 landed her the Best Actress Award at the Bali International Film Festival. “In 2009, I realised my second calling in life, which is to fight against human trafficking. Since then, I’ve also been an activist for that cause. In 2012, I decided to set up my own foundation, Parinama Astha Foundation that focuses on the issue of human trafficking. It was also for that cause that I went into politics. So I received my third calling in early 2013 to run as a legislative candidate. After months of gruelling hard work in my district and by God’s grace, I became a Congresswoman in October 2014.”

Sara recently branched out into producing international films. “At the moment, I am executive-producing a film that is being produced by John Legend. We hope to be debuting at the Sundance Film Festival next year. This year, I am reactivating my foundation. But my highest priority is being a mother to my almost seven-month-old son.”

What does Sara hope to achieve in the future? “One project I have is to set up safe houses for the victims of human trafficking and of abuse,” she replies. “On a personal level, I’d like to raise my children as future leaders who will be wise, God-loving, kind, generous and down-to-earth. Finally, I dream of having the opportunity to act in great international movies and become a household name, which I will use to influence the next generation of change-makers for the betterment of this world.”

Indonesian political aspirant makes a case, and turns heads, against human trafficking

The daughter of one of the wealthiest men in Indonesia was a show-stopper when she spoke at the Asia-Pacific NGO conference on human trafficking in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

And it wasn’t just her good looks or her stylish clothes that had the audience transfixed.

They listened intently as 28-year-old Rahayu Saraswati Djojohadikusumo, who is an award-winning actress and political aspirant, hit out at Jakarta for its corrupt practices and use of religion as a front for human rights abuses, and for its failure in addressing the problem of human trafficking.

Rahayu said it was because of this that she was running for a parliamentary seat in her country’s general election next month.

She said she decided to join the fight against the modern day slavery after attending a conference in London in 2009.

“I got to know at the conference about girls my age and younger who were trapped in a world which they could not escape from, where they had to serve up to 16 men a day. It was shocking,” she said.

That led her to set up Parinama Astha, a foundation dedicated to fighting human trafficking.

Rahayu comes from a who’s who of Indonesian public life.

Her uncle, Prabowo Subianto is running for president in the coming elections. Her father is well-known Indonesian entrepreneur, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, while her mother is Anie Hashim Djojohadikusumo, the founder of Wadah Titian Harapan, which focuses on empowering women.

Rahayu accused Jakarta of not being serious in its fight against human trafficking. – The Malaysian Insider pic, March 22, 2014.

She said that whenever she spoke about human trafficking in Indonesia, she would stress the root cause of the problem, the education system and the socio-economic state of its society.

Indonesia, with a population of some 250 million and an archipelago of more  than 17,000 islands, is a haven for traffickers, said Rahayu.

“Yesterday someone expressed disappointment that Indonesia is so corrupt when it is supposed to have the largest Muslim population in the world.

“Well, I’m sorry to say, the political party that claims to be fighting in the name of Islam is one of the most corrupt in Indonesia,“ she said.

“I refuse to condone those who use religion as an excuse to commit violence against women. If it’s against human rights, then it should not be allowed under any law.”

Rahayu said that it was not a religious crisis, but a moral one.

“I refuse to condone those who use religion as an excuse to commit violence against women.

“If it’s against human rights, then it should not be allowed under any law,” she said.

She cited a village outside Jakarta which was known for selling its girls.

“They are famous for ‘kahwin kontrak’ (contract marriage), where you will find 15-year-old girls who have been divorced up to five times, because the local authorities and religious imam of the community say that if they have not seen their husbands for over six months, they can remarry,” she added.

These girls, said Rahayu, did it for the money, adding that it was a form of trafficking.

“But my government gets all fidgety when they have to tackle issues that have religious grounds,” Rahayu said.

According to her, Indonesia is not only a source country for human trafficking, but also a transit and destination point.

She hit out at her government, saying it was not serious about tackling the menace.

With an estimated 100,000 child trafficking cases every year, there are only five detectives assigned to handle them, she said.

Rahayu said tackling human trafficking was also about addressing education and socio-economic issues, and problems in these areas were the reason why it was difficult for Indonesia to have a proper democratic system.

“In an international education level survey, Indonesia ranked 40th out of 40 countries; this makes human traffickers very happy,” she said, adding that the poor were exploited by the wealthy come every election.

Rahayu, saying she was running a tight campaign against money politics, said instead of giving people envelopes filled with money, she was giving them knowledge.

She said when people were invited to listen to speeches by political aspirants, they usually expected money in the form of ‘wang saku’, mobile ‘top up’, and an envelope filled with about 50,000 rupiahs (RM14.50) in exchange for one’s vote.

With 180,000 voters in her district, this would amount to 9 billion rupiah.

“So I ask the voters where the politician will get the rest of the money to cover the cost of their campaign, and their answer is corruption.

“Then I ask them who put the politicians up there, and they say the people.

“Then I tell them I will not be giving them any envelope,” she said.

Rahayu,  who was previously a co-presenter on a talk show in Indonesia, said that she used various channels to promote her fight against human trafficking.

“The talk show was on national television but it also streamed live online.”

She said that it was her work for the cause that landed her a job as the Indonesian ambassador for cosmetics giant Clinique, and at promotional events, she would bring up her message.

When she represented the country at the Apec Women and Economic forum in Russia two years ago to speak about the work-life balance of women in Asia Pacific countries, Rahayu used the platform to discuss human trafficking.

She said she had no qualms maximising the use of any means to promote her cause.

“Sometimes you have to be shameless and use any means to get the message across, even if it means using your family name to get people to listen.” – March 22, 2014.

Sosialita Melawan Mafia Perdagangan Manusia

Aktor Rahayu Saraswati. Tempo/Aditia Noviansyah

“Setidaknya kami memiliki jaringan.
